Hopey and Maggie (Love and Rockets) Tattoo
In case you’re not familiar, “Love and Rockets” is a seminal alt-comic series, created by Gilberto and Jaime Hernandez in the 1980s. While the comic contains several ongoing serial narratives, my favorite is Jaime’s “Hoppers 13” (aka “Locas”) stories - essentially a soap opera about the impossible love between Hopey and Maggie - pictured above. The series follows them and their group of primarily chicano friends from their teenage punk years to present day.
Last week, the Hernandez brothers stopped at the Free Library of Philadelphia to talk punk rock, surrealism, and drawing characters as they age. I was able to get my “Locas” books signed, but this is some serious commitment. If you want a piece of the action as well, here’s a free flyer download and a tip from NPR Music:
On this week’s Alt.Latino, comic-book pioneers Gil & Jaime Hernandez discuss their revolutionary series Love And Rockets, as well as the music that helped inspire them.
