  1. This isn’t a Halloween trick, just a TV treat: On Halloween night, at 9 p.m. ET, Sundance Channel presents the premiere of an eight-part miniseries that’s unusual and intelligent and interesting enough to deserve notice – even if it is subtitled, slow-moving and very, very subtle in revealing its secrets.
It’s called The Returned, and it’s an eight-part 2012 French miniseries shown on Canal Plus as Les Revenants. Sundance is showing it in prime time, subtitled, and Halloween is the perfect night to unveil it, for reasons I’m reluctant to reveal.
I’m reluctant because this is the type of moody, creepy, cerebral drama that is best enjoyed by those who come to it knowing as little as possible about what they’re about to say. So all I want to do, here, is to steer you in its direction. Every episode of The Returned haunted me long after I saw it – and I expect, and hope, it provides you with the same singular, lasting experience. It premieres Thursday, Oct. 31, at 9 p.m. ET on Sundance Channel.

  1. Happy Halloween from Fresh Scare, Hairy and Gross!
We asked the staff to tell us one of their favorite Halloween memories.

Executive producer Danny Miller:

My favorite costume was for a Halloween party which honored my friend Fred.  Everyone had to wear a “Fred” themed costume.  I went as Fredo, from The Godfather, with a cheap suit, and buttons which said “Mikey can kiss my ass,” “Moe Green can go to hell” and “I’m not stupid, I’m smart!”  But I had to keep explaining to everyone at the party what the joke was.  People thought it was just stupid…

Administrative Assistant Dorothy Ferebee:

My mother was a seamstress and every Halloween she would design an outfit for me. One Halloween she made me a red and gold quipao complete with a fan and a hat. I was about nine. I had slippers with red and gold embroidery and a red, black and gold bag. I was so happy.  I had a potato in my bag in case I had to defend myself. That’s what we did on Halloween in South Philadelphia. We also carried hot potatoes to keep our hands warm on chilly Halloween evenings.

Associate Producer Heidi Saman:
My favorite costume as a kid was when I was a snork. I’m not sure if anyone remembers those, but they were the hydrophillic version of the smurfs.  Here’s the theme song. It was great.  I got a lot of candy and I got to wear a mask…of a snork.

Assistant Producer of Online Media Molly Seavy-Nesper:
My first time trick-or-treating I was a ballerina with a big fluffy tutu. We lived on the South Side of Chicago right on the lake. There was a pretty nasty storm and the winds were insane and a gust of wind lifted little 3 year old me off the ground, taking my tutu right off and sending it into the frigid lake. Pretty traumatic! “It is a bit like painting with history,” Jo Hedwig Teeuwisse says of her project “Ghosts of History.”

She got the idea a few years ago when she found some old negatives at a flea market in Amsterdam, where she lives. “I was very curious about these mysterious photos and wanted to find out who took them and where. So I started to walk around Amsterdam and made photos in the same spot where the old photos were made and combined them on the computer.”

Halloween’s coming soon. And we at Fresh Air want to know what you’re thinking costume-wise this year.
I’ll start. My name is Yowei and I’m strongly leaning towards recreating this Hawaiian snow globe. What about you? View in High-Res
