Happy Birthday to Mick Jagger, who turns 70 today!
Here’s an interview with Mick Jagger on All Things Considered talking about the Rolling Stones mega-hit Gimme Shelter .
(Now that song is going to be stuck in your head all day. You’re welcome)
Also, an interview with Merry Clayton who did back-up vocals for the track. Her story is one of many in the documentary about backup singers, 20 Feet From Stardom.
For good measure: Here’s Keith Richards on Fresh Air to talk about his book Life.

  1. You play for an hour and he would yell across the room, ‘Scribe!’ And I looked around. ‘Scribe? Who’s the scribe?’ And he’d say it again, now pointing at me. I was supposed to have written down everything we said and dreamt of and played. And I realized we needed an adult in the room. I’ve never been the one that one would consider the adult. It was an interesting dynamic.

  1. Ladies and Gentlemen … The Rolling Stones reflects an early-days concept of what a rock show should be — an almost punk-like spareness to the stage set, 15 songs in a punchy 82 minutes, and a furious, almost deranged set of final numbers. (Milo Miles, Looking Back at the Rolling Stones, Live in Texas 1972, on Fresh Air 11/5/10)

    austinkleon:

I did it lying down, darling.

I don’t know about you, honey, but I do most of this stuff lying down.

    Darling, I don’t know. I dreamt it.

I love them both, honey. Don’t ask me to cut the babies in half.

I mean, it’s only rock n’ roll, honey.

I didnt never knew what they called it, honey.

I mean, boo, we all bump into death at one time or another, honey.

    Good try, honey.

  1. Quite honestly, I think the band wants to play. The boys want to play together, and hopefully we can get on the ups here. We’re thinking ahead. I know, obviously, because of the book, and there’s a lot of retro going on and stuff. But as far as I’m concerned, get over it. Get on ahead. We want to make some records, and we want to do some good shows, and we believe that we have it in us to do that.

  1. Keith Richards, on coming up with the riff for ‘Satisfaction’ while dreaming: "I go to bed as usual with my guitar, and I wake up the next morning, and I see that the tape is run to the very end. And I think, ‘Well, I didn’t do anything. Maybe I hit a button when I was asleep.’ So I put it back to the beginning and pushed play and there, in some sort of ghostly version, is [the opening lines to ‘Satisfaction’]. It was a whole verse of it. And after that, there’s 40 minutes of me snoring. But there’s the song in its embryo, and I actually dreamt the damned thing." View in High-Res
