In the spirit of year-end lists, we thought it’d be fun to share not necessarily top tens or bottom fives, but just some of our favorite things (photographs, movies, songs, TV episodes, we’re not picky) from 2012. The things that got us thinking or talking. I’ll start it off.
David Simon (yes David Simon of The Wire and Treme) started a blog called "The Audacity of Despair." Some weeks he posts a lot, some weeks it’s intermittent. Some weeks it’s deep stuff, some weeks he just has some feelings to express about the Orioles. But it’s what he writes when he writes about media, say, or in remembrance of a man he’d known for twenty years and who met a sad end, that makes his blog such excellent reading. He sees the world as a messy place and he doesn’t consider himself apart from or above that mess. He’s in it. His hands are dirty. His feet too, probably.
You can also listen to Terry’s interview with Simon here.
We’d love to hear from you, too: What were some of the best things you stumbled upon this year? Email me — nboeschenstein(at)whyy(dot)org. We’ll put some of the responses up on the Tumblr. - Nell
